EFB, also called Palm Empty Fruit Bunch, is a biomass material used to make fuel pellets because it has high fiber content and a high calorific value when burned, making it a good raw material. The pellets can be used for home heating boilers, pellet furnaces, and power plants. Besides EFB, palm tree timber is also a good raw material for biomass fuel pellets.

Our EFB pellet-making machine uses a vertical ring die pellet-making machine because EFB has a low bulk density. After grinding, EFB fiber is soft and moves poorly. A vertical ring die pellet-making machine is well-suited to feeding raw material and producing pellets from low-bulk-density feedstock, so using it to produce pellets from EFB is more efficient than other pellet machines.

EFB is an empty fruit bunch from a palm tree; to make pellets, it needs pre-processing because EFB pellet machines have requirements for raw material size and moisture. The best size to feed EFB into a pellet machine is around 6 mm, so we need to refine the EFB size first. Usually, we use an EFB chipper or shredder to turn the EFB into fiber; the fiber is 20-50 mm long and 1-2 mm thick. Then we use a hammer mill to refine the fiber to about 6 mm long. The best moisture content for pellets is 15%, but EFB is usually around 50%, so we use a rotary drum dryer to dry the EFB fiber from the EFB chipper. Thus, the common procedure to make pellets from EFB is: first, use an EFB chipper to turn EFB into fiber; second, use a rotary drum dryer to reduce the moisture of the EFB fiber to 15%; third, use a hammer mill to refine the size of the EFB fiber to 6 mm; and finally, usean  EFB pellet-making machine to make pellets. This has more advantages for making EFB pellets compared with other types of pellets:

Because EFB fiber is soft and has low bulk density, when you feed EFB into a vertical ring die pellet-making machine, the material can drop into the pelletizing chamber directly from the top, so the vertical-type pellet machine has an advantage in feeding EFB to the pellet mill; EFB cannot block the pellet machine during feeding.

• 2. When EFB is fed into the pelletizing chamber, the vertical-type pellet machine runs the rollers while the ring die remains stable; the centrifugal force generated by the rotating rollers makes it easier for the rollers to press EFB fibers into the ring die holes.

1. 3. The ring die compression ratio is important for pellet production; if it is not suitable for the raw material, it cannot produce good-quality pellets. We have experience pelletizing EFB and know the best compression ratio to make 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm diameter EFB pellets.
