Soap has a wide range of uses, in addition to the familiar use for washing clothes, it is also widely used in the textile industry. The sodium salt of higher fatty acid is usually used most often, which is generally called hard soap; its potassium salt is called soft soap, which is mostly used for shampooing and shaving. Its ammonium salt is often used to make vanishing creams. According to the composition of soap, from the point of view of the fatty acid part, soaps made from fatty acids with greater saturation are harder; conversely, soaps made from fatty acids with greater unsaturation are softer. The main raw material of soap is fat with a higher melting point. Considering the length of the carbon chain, generally speaking, if the carbon chain of fatty acid is too short, the solubility of soap made in water is too large; if the carbon chain is too long, the solubility is too small. Therefore, only C10~C20 fatty acid potassium or sodium salts are suitable for soap. In fact, soap contains the most sodium salts of C16~C18 fatty acids.
Soap usually contains a lot of water. After adding spices, dyes, and other fillers to the finished product, various soaps are obtained.
Commonly used yellow laundry soaps are generally mixed with rosin, which is added in the form of sodium salt, the purpose of which is to increase the solubility of soap and foam more, and it is also relatively cheap as a filler.
White laundry soap is added with sodium carbonate and water glass (the content can be up to 12%). The general laundry soap contains about 30% of water. If the white laundry soap is dried and cut into thin slices, soap flakes can be obtained, which can be used to wash high-quality fabrics.
Add an appropriate amount of a mixture of phenol and cresol (antiseptic, antiseptic) or boric acid to soap to get medicated soap. Soap needs more advanced raw materials, for example, the soap made from tallow or palm oil and coconut oil is mixed, crushed, dried to a water content of about 10-15%, and then added with spices and dyes, and then pressed into a shape.
Liquid potassium soap is often used as shampoo, etc. It is usually made from coconut oil.
